1969 Koo Koo Ku Hoo Fall Ordeal

Koo Koo Ku Hoo Lodge was originally founded as Ne-Pah-Win Lodge on July 7, 1939. Headquartered in Lynchburg, VA the Lodge was the second oldest in both Area III-C and in the state of Virginia after Nawakwa Lodge 3. The Lodge name translates to “wise old bird of the forest,” referencing their Lodge totem, the owl.

The patch above was issued for their Fall Ordeal, conducted October 24-26, 1969 at Camp Monocan near Nellysford, VA. The November, 1969 edition of the Kecoughtan Kryer describes a visit by 5 brothers from Kecoughtan Lodge and 2 from Blue Heron Lodge to the event.

Attending Arrowmen were treated to hot cider and donuts at the Friday evening cracker-barrel. Saturday activities at the event are described as “varying from patch trading to climbing Camp Monocan’s very own mountain,” Crawford Knob.

Unlike most other OA round activity emblems that are 3″ in diameter, this patch is a “super sized” version, measuring 4″ in diameter.

In 1973 Piedmont Area Council merged with adjoining Blue Ridge Council, and Camp Monocan ceased operations. The property was sold and now is part of the Wintergreen Resort. Koo Koo Ku Hoo Lodge 161 and Powhatan Lodge 456 merged  to form Tutelo Lodge 161.
