161-eX1968

Founded in 1939, Koo Koo Ku Hoo Lodge 161 was the second-oldest Lodge in Virginia, serving Piedmont Council of Lynchburg. The lodge name translates to “wise old bird of the forest,” and its totem was an owl with outstretched wings as featured in the diamond-shaped 1968 Spring Fellowship patch.

Camp Monocan was the home of Koo Koo Ku Hoo Lodge. Located in Nelson County, the camp operated from the 1930s through 1973. The former camp property is now part of the Wintergreen Ski Resort.

Koo Koo Ku Hoo merged with Powhatan Lodge 456 of Blue Ridge Council in Roanoke in 1972, forming Tutelo Lodge 161. In recognition of their rich history, many Tutelo emblems feature the totems of Koo Koo Ku Hoo and Powhatan Lodges.

The best reference for Koo Koo Ku Hoo and Powhatan Lodges is Steve Collins’ comprehensive Blue Ridge Mountains patch site.
