Shenshawpotoo Lodge 276 of Shenandoah Area Council, Winchester VA, recently issued a flap patch in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout. Shown above (click image for a larger view) the flap features an abstract swooping eagle embroidered in red, white and blue on a white background with the OA arrowhead, BSA fleur d’lis, and a deer hoofprint in gray.

In August of 1912, Arthur Rose Eldred of Oceanside, NY was notified by the Boy Scouts of America that he had completed the requirements for Eagle Scout. As the first Eagle Scout he had to wait for his medal because the die for it hadn’t yet been completed. Also, local review boards didn’t exist so he had to pass an examination by Chief Scout Executive James E. West, Chief Scout Ernest Thompson Seton, National Scout Commissioner Daniel Carter Beard, and Wilbert E. Longfellow who wrote the swimming and lifesaving sections of the Boy Scout Handbook.
