New versions of Shenandoah standard flaps

Shenandoah Lodge’s flap patch is timeless. The Chief profile inside an arrowhead centered above a lake with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background has been used as the design of the Lodge’s standard emblem since the first solid embroidered flap was issued in 1962. Minor changes like the addition of the fleur d’lis and different border colors have occurred over the years, but the design remains virtually the same as when it first appeared over half a century ago. When I first started collecting OA patches I longed to add a Shenandoah flap to my collection, but at the time they were highly restricted so many years passed before I was able to trade for one.

Recently the Lodge issued new versions of their standard Lodge flap, and since they are noticeably different than prior ones they merit new issue numbers for collectors and traders to identify them. Fortunately patch restrictions are no longer in place so your chances to add one or both to your collection are very good.
Two versions of the standard flap are currently issued by the Lodge, sharing the same design but with different border colors. The Ordeal member version of the flap has a white border, while the Brotherhood version has a blue border. A red bordered Vigil member flap has not been issued by the Lodge since the mid 1990’s.
The most recent versions of the Shenandoah flaps are recognizable by the W’s not having periods after them and increased spacing in the lettering when compared to the 2012 versions. The current patches are manufactured by Krelman and have an identifying sticker on the reverse. No standard Shenandoah 258 flaps prior to the 2012 versions were without periods after the W’s.
Below are pictures of the most recent versions (S62-white border Ordeal and S63-blue border Brotherhood) along with the 2012 standard flap versions (S54-white border Ordeal and S55-blue border Brotherhood). Pictures of the reverse of each patch are also included. Click each image to view a larger version.

The flaps below were first issued in 2012 but have visible differences from the new standard flaps. Notice the tighter and thicker lettering and narrower width of the patches.

Thanks to Alex Wiatt of Shenandoah Lodge for providing the patches for the pictures. Historical information from Mike White’s Shenandoah Lodge-Sixty Years of Service book.

Hey Glenn,
The vigil flaps were still in use ~2005. I stopped by their council office once while visiting a friend in Staunton and bought a brick of each variety as I was low on traders at the time.
