Shenshawpotoo Lodge 276 of Winchester, VA recently issued a pink ghost version of their Lodge service flap to raise awareness and funds to battle breast cancer. Travis Gregg of Shenshawpotoo provided details of this limited edition patch pictured above.

We all encounter people who deal with or know of someone dealing with cancer. It is a very real fear in today’s world, and our lodge felt it was a good idea of a way to give back to not just the local community but the world as a whole. The inspiration for the patch was simple;  find a fundraiser that can touch everyone. The lodge has always done service for the camp and council and thought it would be a good notion to the communities we serve by donating half of the sales on each patch to the American Cancer Society. After all we should each do a good turn daily. The idea for the patch was brought to light by our Lodge Advisor Richard Holder at the February Lodge Executive committee (L.E.C.) meeting. The L.E.C. approved the proposal to commission a pink version of our current service flap for the Lodge fundraiser. The order for the flaps was placed shortly after. There were 300 flaps made and they were introduced at the Lodge’s Fall Ordeal on the weekend of August 10th, 11th, 12th. It was a weekend of fun and fellowships adorned with a pretty new patch that had a just cause.

Although Shenshawpotoo was the first lodge in SR-7A to issue a breast cancer awareness flap, similar patches have been issued by other OA lodges across the country. Japeechen Lodge 341 of Jersey Shore Council NJ was the first in 2007 with a patch designed by Bryan Koehler to honor his Mother who was diagnosed with the disease in 2006.

Other notable breast cancer awareness flaps have been issued by Gila 378, Occoneechee 104, Tahosa 383, and Papago 494. In addition to being beautiful additions to your collection the purpose helps support a great cause.
